The National Theatre of Montenegro was founded in the middle of the previous century, as the City Theatre.
It obtained the status of the National Theatre in 1969.
In 1989, the building of the National Theatre disappeared in a catastrophic fire, without the possibility of revitalization.
Only in 1996, after several years of preparation and construction of the new building, the phase of the final technological furnishing and completion of interior works began.
Svetlost Teatar, with a relatively limited budget, successfully equipped the building of the National Theatre of Montenegro with the systems of stage machinery, stage lighting, audio and video systems.
The new building was opened in May 1997.
In the new environment, equipped with technological systems that enable a different approach to contemporary theatre projects, the National Theatre of Montenegro reached a high artistic level and its plays received international recognition.
